Mark Peceny, Professor of Political Science at the University of New Mexico

This talk will look at the international politics of the post-Cold War wave of democratization around the world, and the more recent reverse wave that has led to an increasing number of authoritarian regimes globally. It will focus most intently on the role of the United States in shaping these global trends and will speculate about possible future trends in the context of the upcoming elections in the United States.
Mark Peceny is a Professor of Political Science at the University of New Mexico, where he has taught since 1992. He studies democracy, dictatorship and the international system, with special attention to the promotion of democracy in U.S. foreign policy, the subject of his book, Democracy at the Point of Bayonets. He teaches a range of course in international relations and American Foreign Policy. From 2011-2021 he served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at UNM.
