Recently there appears to be a steady and accelerating barrage of news reports on novel and re-appearing infectious diseases. Is this, in fact, the case? If so, why is it happening and how is the international public community responding to it? Dr. Mills’ presentation will consider factors contributing to the outbreak of emerging infectious diseases and examine recent examples. It will also look at the current initiatives of international health agencies, in partnership with individual countries, to respond to the problem. Through the establishment of a “One Health” approach, nations are working together to achieve earlier detection of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, with the goal of preventing and controlling outbreaks to reduce human disease and mortality.
Dr. David Mills, was the Director of the Scientific Laboratory Division of the New Mexico Department of Health for 18 years, overseeing public health testing and is the Past President of the Association of Public Health Laboratories. He has participated in public health laboratory assessment, planning, national public health laboratory network development, laboratory leadership and quality management training projects, working in 29 countries in Central and South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia. From 1981 to 1993, he was Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Health Studies, University of Waterloo, Ontario Canada.
