Garrett Smith, AIA, LEED AP
January 10, 2016 (Sun)

Torino! Milano! Verona! Vicenza! Belinzona! Bern! Basel! Vals! These are the cities in Italy and Switzerland you will visit when you attend Garrett Smith’s lecture. In his talk Garrett Smith will combine art, architecture, history and mystery.  He will introduce you to hidden treasures most tourists never see and will produce a marvelous banquet, a savory visual and intellectual concoction. Smith’s lecture will be a preview of AIA’s boutique trip to Northern Italy and Switzerland in June 2016. For those planning to take part, this lecture will be a wonderful hors d’oeuvre, and for those who can’t make it, a satisfying consolation.

Garrett Smith has practiced architecture for 35 years and is licensed in New Mexico, California and Arizona.  He started his own design studio in 1990 with a particular interest in contemporary design, urban planning and teaching at UNM. In 1997 he brought his family to Northern Italy to live and work.  He returned to the US in 1998 and started a travel/lecture program for students from New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado.   Each year students would spend one month living, learning and meeting the architecture and landscape architecture world of Northern Italy and Switzerland.  In 2014 he started a new practice concentrating on unique infill housing and urban design.  He continues to travel to Italy and Switzerland for extended periods each year where he studies and explores the antiquities and progressive urban environment of Europe.
